Scenario #05
THE MEMORY LOSS
Cognitive Security Failure
You blink awake in an unfamiliar room. A hospital room. The doctor approaches with a concerned expression.
"You've experienced significant trauma," she explains gently. "You're suffering from retrograde amnesia. Your long-term memory has been affected."
MEMORY STATUS: SEVERELY COMPROMISED
According to your medical chart, you were in an accident three weeks ago. You've been unconscious for most of that time. Basic personal information has returned, your name, where you live, fragments of your past, but significant gaps remain.
Your spouse sits beside your bed, relieved you're awake but clearly worried.
"The doctors say some memories might never return," they explain. "But we need to discuss something important. Our financial advisor called. We need to access your cryptocurrency holdings for medical expenses. You're the only one who knew how to access them."
Your Situation
You try to concentrate, but your memory feels like Swiss cheese:
- You vaguely recall owning cryptocurrency, substantial amounts
- You have fleeting images of setting up security measures
- You remember being extremely careful about security
- You can't recall specific wallets, exchanges, or access methods
- Passwords and seed phrases are completely blank
Your spouse brings a box of your personal effects from home that might help:
- A notebook with cryptic notations
- Several USB drives
- A hardware wallet you don't recognize how to use
- A sealed envelope with "EMERGENCY ACCESS" written on it
- Your smartphone (password protected, you can't remember the code)
Immediate Assessment
Recovery Challenge: Memory Reconstruction
- What systems did you put in place for loved ones to access funds?
- Did you leave instructions that don't rely on your memory?
- How can your spouse help piece together your security system?
- What clues in your personal effects might lead to access?
- Did you entrust critical information to anyone else?
Complications
As you struggle to recall your setup:
- The medical bills are mounting daily
- Your spouse admits they weren't involved in your crypto security
- The neurologist suggests your memory may continue to improve, but there's no guarantee
- Your financial advisor mentions that a significant tax payment is also due soon
- You discover notes suggesting you recently moved funds to a new security setup you can't remember
Your Mission
Work with your loved ones to recover access to your crypto holdings despite your compromised memory. You must reconstruct your security system using only the clues and contingencies your past self left behind.
How will you regain access to funds when you can't remember your own security measures?
Your spouse looks at you with a mix of hope and concern. "You always said you had a foolproof system," they say. "Something about if anything ever happened to you... Do you remember anything about that?"
MEMORY FRAGMENTS: Attempting to reconstruct...
What retrieval methods did your past self establish?
